Notes from Underground

And, indeed, I will ask on my own account here, an idle question: which is better—cheap happiness or exalted sufferings? Well, which is better?---Fyodor Dostoevsky ---Notes from Underground Fyodor Dostoevsky ---Notes from Underground Even now, so many years later, all this is somehow a very evil memory. I have many evil memories now, but ... hadn’t I better end my “Notes” here? I believe I made a mistake in beginning to write them, anyway I have felt ashamed all the time I’ve been writing this story; so it’s hardly literature so much as a corrective punishment.  Why, to tell long stories, showing how I have spoiled my life through morally rotting in my corner, through lack of fitting environment, through divorce from real life, and rankling spite in my underground world, would certainly not be interesting; a novel needs a hero, and all the traits for an anti-hero are expressly gathered together here, and what matters most, it all produces an unpleasant impression, for we are...

Hope

To be human is to be a miracle of evolution conscious of its own miraculousness — a consciousness beautiful and bittersweet, for we have paid for it with a parallel awareness not only of our fundamental improbability but of our staggering fragility, of how physiologically precarious our survival is and how psychologically vulnerable our sanity. To make that awareness bearable, we have evolved a singular faculty that might just be the crowning miracle of our consciousness: hope.-- Erich Fromm

Wherever I Go

Maybe I'm bound to wander
From one place to the next
Heaven knows why

But in the wild blue yonder
Your star is fixed
In my sky

Just another bar, at a cross roads
So far from home
But that's alright
Whenever I'm going down the dark road
I don't feel alone in the night

There's a place in my heart
Though we're far apart
May you always know?
No matter how long since I saw you
I keep the flame there for you
Wherever I go

They're looking too close up in here
Pulling down the blinds
But they'll let you stay a while
And I'm going, in a while

Now I've got leave you, brother
So this round's mine
Just looking at you, anyhow
You can go on and have another
You wouldn't, call time
I'm gonna say my goodbye's now

There's a place in my heart
Though we're far apart
May you always, know?
No matter how long since I saw you
I keep the flame there for you
Wherever I go

Mark Knopfler Discography

Mark Knopfler

Mark Knopfler (born August 12, 1949) is a Scottish-born guitarist, singer, and songwriter who redefined the sound of rock guitar in the late 1970s and 80s. Best known as the frontman of Dire Straits, his unique fingerstyle technique and cinematic songwriting have made him one of the most respected musicians in history.

1. Career Highlights

The Dire Straits Era (1977–1995)

Knopfler founded Dire Straits in London with his brother David and bassist John Illsley. At a time when punk rock was dominant, their clean, jazz-inflected sound stood out.

  • Sultans of Swing: The 1978 breakout hit that introduced his signature "clean" Stratocaster tone.

  • Brothers in Arms (1985): One of the best-selling albums in history, featuring iconic tracks like "Money for Nothing," "Walk of Life," and the title track. It was a pioneer of the digital recording era.

  • Alchemy: Widely considered one of the greatest live albums in rock history, showcasing Knopfler’s improvisational skill.

Solo Career & Soundtracks

Since disbanding Dire Straits in 1995, Knopfler has focused on a more roots-oriented solo career, blending folk, blues, and country.

  • Solo Albums: Notable works include Golden Heart (1996), Sailing to Philadelphia (2000), and his most recent release, One Deep River (2024).

  • Film Scores: He is a celebrated composer for film, most notably for Local Hero (1983), The Princess Bride (1987), and Last Exit to Brooklyn (1989).

2. The Knopfler Sound

Knopfler is famous for a "fingerstyle" technique—playing without a plectrum (pick). He uses his thumb and first two fingers to "pluck" and "snap" the strings, allowing for a more vocal, expressive quality.

  • Gear: While he is synonymous with the red Fender Stratocaster, he is also famous for his 1937 National Style O resonator guitar (seen on the cover of Brothers in Arms).

  • Style: His music often features rich storytelling, lyrical guitar solos, and a deep appreciation for "Americana" and British folk traditions.

3. Notable Collaborations

A "musician's musician," Knopfler has worked with a legendary roster of artists:

  • Chet Atkins: His idol and later collaborator on the Grammy-winning Neck and Neck.

  • Bob Dylan: Produced Dylan’s Infidels (1983) and played on Slow Train Coming.

  • Emmylou Harris: Recorded the acclaimed duet album All the Roadrunning (2006).

  • The Guitar Heroes: In 2024, he released a charity version of "Going Home (Theme from Local Hero)" featuring over 60 legendary guitarists, including Eric Clapton, Slash, and David Gilmour.

4. Current Status (2026)

As of 2026, Mark Knopfler remains active in the studio but has retired from large-scale global touring.

  • Last Tour: His final world tour took place in 2019 following the album Down the Road Wherever.

  • Legacy: In 2024, he auctioned off a large portion of his historic guitar collection for charity, raising nearly $11 million, signaling a transition into a quieter phase of his career focused on recording at his British Grove Studios in London.

"A guitar is just a piece of wood and some wire. It’s what you do with it that counts." — Mark Knopfler
